Succulents in Thailand
Sometimes life can be full of surprises in places you could not begin to imagine. Before I retired to live in Thailand, I read everything I could about the land and culture of this amazing country. I read about Buddhism, the wats, the language, do’s and don’ts, and food. I read about the history, holidays, poisonous snakes and insects, and government. I read about how tropical the country was and how green and big the plants grew here. What I did not read about was how many different succulents and cacti grew here and how popular they are with the people of Thailand.
When my wife and I married and moved into our new house, we wanted to landscape the yard as there was little grass and only a few living plants to be found. I had palms and ferns in pots I had bought from a small nursery near where I was living. They were dwarfed by the size of our new yard so my wife and I ventured off to the nearest big nursery we could find. What we found there amazed us. We were not expecting to see hundreds of varieties of different succulents and cacti on display. It seemed that at each different nursery there were succulents for sale. We were so excited by the flowers on the plants that we soon became big fans and started our own succulent and cactus garden. Now we look out over the garden looking for any sign of new growth and flowers.
